I am passionate about technology integration and am always looking for new and innovative ways to create the best 21st century learning environment for my students. I strongly believe that kids can change the world and give them every opportunity to start while in my class through global collaborative projects.

    Karen Ogen Lexington Richland 5 School District

    Karen Ogen is the Grant Coordinator and Lead Teacher at Seven Oaks Elementary MEDIA Magnet School in Columbia, South Carolina. Seven Oaks is an inquiry-driven, project based, 1:1 school that also teaches through media production. Karen has been integrating technology in the classroom and training teachers to embrace technology for over 16 years in her current role as well as in her former position as a technology integration specialist. She has created many resources for educators including Interactive Sites for Education which is used by thousands of elementary school children everyday. Karen is proud to be a Discovery Education Guru and a National Board Certified Teacher.

  • Jeffery Baugus

    Jeffery Baugus Santa Rosa County School District

    Jeffery Baugus teaches Algebra 1 to eighth graders at Woodlawn Beach Middle School in Gulf Breeze, Florida. He holds a B.A. in Interpersonal Communication from the University of South Alabama and a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of West Florida. Mr. Baugus incorporates a flipped model classroom for his curriculum while also utilizing social media and music to maximize students' discussion of content. He is also known for striving to create a fun, mysterious classroom environment. His most recent endeavor is a year-long Harry Potter style house competition between students.

  • Kyle Schutt Discovery Education

    Kyle joined Discovery Education in 2010, and has worked with educators throughout the country to help them better understand how technology and digital media can be used to support instruction, motivate students, and increase passion for learning. Schutt has fostered relationships and community-building by hosting in-person and virtual events for the Discovery Educator Network (DEN), most recently enjoying brainstorming, creating, producing and moderating Discovery Education"s virtual field trips and student focused events.

    Chris Kennedy is the Superintendent of Schools / CEO with the West Vancouver School District (West Vancouver, BC). He has taught secondary English and Social Studies, and been both an elementary and secondary school principal. One of the most progressive voices in BC education, Chris has been featured by Macleans Magazine as one of the 100 Young Canadians to Watch and his work has been featured in various local and national publications. In 2010 he was named one of the Top 10 Canadian Newsmakers in Educational Technology , in 2011 Business in Vancouver named him to their top Forty under 40 list and in 2012 Chris was named Canada’s Top Education Blogger. Kennedy is a writer and presenter on personalized learning and infusing technology in the classroom. Chris balances his professional passions with life as the father of four young children.   • Conni Mulligan Buncombe County Schools

    Conni Mulligan is an Instructional Technology Facilitator for Buncombe County Schools in Asheville, NC, DENbassador, DEN GURU, STAR Discovery Educator, Fablevision and Glogster Ambassador. She collaborates with K-12 administrators and teachers across curricular areas focusing on seamless technology integration. She has spent time as a classroom teacher in the elementary and middle school levels, an adjunct faculty member for a local college and community college and has provided various staff development workshops for NCTIES, ICE & ISTE. In her spare time, she works with the Asheville Puppetry Alliance where she enjoys creating, performing and promoting the art and craft of puppetry.

Hurt is a self-proclaimed SUDOKU Champion and Words with Friends Wizard (CarlettaS).

  • David Thornburg The Thornburg Center

    David Thornburg is one of the pioneers in the field of computing in education and has worked tirelesly in the field since 1981 after spending a decade at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, where he had a hand in developing some of the technologies we still use today. He presents at conferences all over the world, and is active n the field of STEM education. His current work is involved with the power of 3D printers in the classroom. And, just to keep busy, he also teaches in the doctoral program at Walden University where he developed a course on emerging and future tech. He is also quite interested in the Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics.

    I currently serve as the Academic Manager of Innovative Learning Environments for the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada. Charged with having 100,000 students engaged in online/blended learning by 2015-16, I oversee the Nevada Learning Academy @ CCSD and support all District schools in implementing online and blended learning programs. Through the Office of School Reform and Innovation, I support innovative school proposals that increase achievement or operational efficiency. Additionally, I am furthering the transition to digital learning and 1:1 computing through the Bring Your Own Device initiative. I have served the Clark County School District for 15 years in varied locations and roles as a principal, assistant principal, region data coordinator, dean of students, and a mathematics instructor.

    This transplanted Texan is a tech geek that wants to see the best of tech help the struggling learner. Our 21st century learners have more than games to play; they have tools to tutor themselves and grow their expertise. I've been involved in special needs one to one mentoring/assisting 12 years in our school division guiding students from ages 3 to 15 with autism, Down syndrome,and cerebral palsy including 4 years experience with the iPad helping these visual learners succeed. My favorite quote is "Education Is Not the Filling of a Pail, But the Lighting of a Fire" I say,"Let the pyromania begin!"

    As a former kindergarten teacher and school Director of Technology Steve Dembo is a pioneer in the field of educational social networking. Currently serving as Discovery Education’s Director of Social Media Strategy and Online Community, Dembo is the co-author of the book Untangling the Web: 20 Tools to Power Up Your Teaching. The National School Board Association named him one of 2010's "Twenty to Watch," a list honoring individuals finding innovative ways to use technology to increase classroom learning. In 2013 he began serving the Skokie/Morton Grove District 69 as a member of the School Board. Dembo is a course designer and adjunct professor for Wilkes University where he serves as class instructor for the Internet Tools for Teaching course within the Instructional Media degree program.

    Elaine is an instructional resource trainer for secondary science teachers in a large public school district in Texas. A member of the DEN Guru class of 2012, Elaine was recently named as one of the National School Board Association's 20 Educators to Watch. In addition to her daily duties, Elaine is a gender equity trainer and online course developer for pre-service teacher training and is the National Technology in Education blogger for the Examiner.

  • Willow Alston

    Willow Alston Moore County Schools

    Willow Alston is the 9-12 STEM Master Teacher for the Mebane Foundation STEM Infusion Grant project with Moore County Schools. Ms. Alston has 10 years experience in education and previously taught Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Earth Science at Hoke County High School. In 2011, Willow was awarded the Kenan Fellowship for Curriculum and Leadership Development. Ms. Alston is currently completing a fellowship with the North Carolina Science Leadership Association and is also trained as an NCCAT Seize the Data Literacy Specialist.

    Porter joined the Discovery Education family in 2006. As the Director of the Global Community, her job is to listen closely to the members of the community and help bring ideas to fruition. Prior to joining Discovery Education, she worked with states to develop and implement assessments for students with disabilities. She taught special education in South Carolina for eight years and remains a passionate advocate for persons with disabilities.

    Veronica Lopez has served students and teachers as a teacher, principal, instructional facilitator, district coordinator, and certified professional development provider. Her work has been published in ASCD Express and Google has authorized her as an official Helpouts provider. She is the author of Iggy Boulder and The Rock Cycle. She has also worked in a Math Pilot Study for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Marilyn Burns.
